I am Uncanny

I just saw the new GE advertisement for "clean coal", with the background music as one of my favorite folk songs, Sixteen Tons (Company Store) as recorded by Tennessee Ernie Ford. Really interesting that a song describing how working for the coal company is like selling your soul is being used to promote an attractive vision of clean coal for the future.

Slate just ran a critique of the spot and solicited reader responses for ironic/incompatible song pairings in advertisements. They mention just about every single ad I've noted myself in the past two years, PLUS the infamous Janis Joplin 'Mercedes Benz' spots.

This just makes you wonder if the general public actually pays attention to lyrics or if they just make decisions based on how recognizeable/upbeat/"trendy" each song is. . . WOW.

London

Mr Blair said it was "reasonably clear" terrorists were behind the blasts.

"It is important that those engaged in terrorism realise that our determination to defend our values and our way of life is greater than their determination to cause death and destruction to innocent people in a desire to impose extremism on the world," he said.

"Whatever they do, it is our determination that they will never succeed in destroying what we hold dear in this country and in other civilised nations throughout the world."

I couldn't quite put my finger on why I like Tony Blair but that quote, and the fact that he's leaving the G8 summit in Scotland to survey the damage and reassure the citizens of London are two reasons I'm a Blair-fan today.
