Appearing in today's New York Times . . .

An Amish woman who is a member of the very strict Swartzentruber group tried to grasp the concept of "Amish in the City." Referring to Hollywood and reality television, she asked, "Is it some kind of church?"

I'm not sure that she's too far off in that evaluation of "reality" TV.

And now for something completely different. . .

TV takes on September 12th. Cathartic? Campy? Crap? You decide.

Today's Event . . .

So everyone knows by now that Matt works for a radio station. He gets to go to a bunch of events around our area, and we've brushed elbows with a bunch of really neat people. . . including almost being able to shake Bruce Springsteen's hand.

At today's event, we were out in a muddy field, giving away prizes, playing trivia games when who should appear but. . . Felipe Lopez*.

The Indian from The Village People. He's a lot shorter than I thought he would be. And very tan. But he seems like a very nice guy, which makes me happy, because it would really suck if he didn't give off that "nice guy" aura.

This has been today's brush with greatness.

* Correction: Shortly after this was posted, Matt found the actual name of the Indian from the Village People. Apparently, it's not "Lopez", it's "Rose".

Lest I Forget to Mention. . .

It has now arrived:

The Ken Jennings Drinking Game.

Better than Star Wars or Asshole, the Ken Jennings Drinking Game aims to please and leave you heaving.

Did I forget to mention. . .?

Now that I get my computer to myself (it's an odd weekend evening that I get that one) . . .

I learned last week that having nail tips was a lot of fun BUT. . . getting them longer than I usually grow my nails is not. Especially when my job involves a ton of typing, filing and paper clips.

Lesson learned, the tips are off and I am wearing my contacts again (yay!) and I will never get tips that long again.

Come to think of it, I'm not really keen on the idea of getting tips again anyway, since removing them involves soaking my hands in a bowl of acetone to dissolve the acrylic. The funny thing about that is when my hands went in they felt wet and slippery, like I was soaking in oil or water. But once they came out the first time, they felt bone-dry. As in, toweled off and in the desert or the middle of the winter bone dry. It was rather icky-icky. And there's a small nick at the cuticle of the pinky finger on my right hand that made cleaning the tub this morning oh-so-much fun. . .

But other than that, I'm back to normal.

Today's Top Story

Today was very interesting . . . as I test type a post while wearing acrylic tips that are rather too long for me today. . .

Matt and I had one of our discussions this week about getting my nails done, along with shopping for new clothes and getting my makeup done.

Well, today started with our usual Saturday breakfast of bagels and then off to the mall to see about the nails.

While at the mall, taking a lap around to see what it's got to offer (this place is kinda like the Central-NJ version of the Wayne Hills Mall plus the Wayne Towne Center, sort of) and Matt wanted to find pants for work.

So we hit Old Navy as we headed off to Macy's. While there, Matt suggested, as he has on numerous occasions, that I check out how much a Clinique makeover would be. . . I figured I might as well have my colors done and see what happens.

My foot-dragging aside, I've got myself a new summer look. And some nifty skin-care stuff to keep my face looking its best even without makeup.

After the mini-makeover, we hit the nail salon.

An hour later, I have powder blue, Lady Deathstrike claws, that look great, but I need to sleep on it before I decide one way or other about them.

As it stands right now, part of me is screaming "they hurt and I want them gone!!!!" . . . but there's the vain part that wants to keep them because they look pretty.

For what it's worth, my usual typing speed is about 45 wpm, and I type nasty-slow with these things on. . . I don't know yet. I'm gonna sleep on it.

Long Time, No Posts

Boy oh boy do I ever have to catch you all up on things. . .well, all 4 of you who read this blog with any regularity.

Here's a list of what I learned over the past few weeks:

(1) Playing out in the yard with a very active 2-year-old burns calories and is a damn good time, too.

I learned this on Sunday that running around and rolling in the grass increased my energy level and allowed me to have a really good time at a family barbecue. And if I got some grass-stains in the process, so be it.

(2)Throwing a baseball at the park is fun, but don't overdo it, especially when the last time you picked up a ball and glove was 15 years ago.

My shoulder is sore, but I'm already looking forward to doing it again.

(3) Taking walks with Matt is fun, but not on hot, sticky days.

Hot, sticky days make us both cranky.

(4) Bruce Springsteen isn't larger than life in person. And this continues to comfort me.

It's nice to get the sense that "superstars" are regular people and they're not billboard-sized monsters.

(5) Asbury Park is a nice place to visit and it feels like life this year.

This is a good thing. It's tough to have so much potential thrown away.

(6) Strip clubs can be learning experiences.

More on this later. Once the Reagan eulogy disappears. I feel creepy blogging about it before then.

As for everything else, well, the humidity is keeping me more low-key than I'd like, but as long as I get some training time in for the Avon Walk, I'll be just fine.
